The next couple of weeks will see a number of Cayman golfers compete in various big tournaments around the Caribbean region.
This week sees Cayman’s top ranked amateur Justin Hastings play in his first PGA Tour event when he takes up a sponsor invite to make a start in the Puerto Rico Open at Grand Reserve in Rio Mar. While he won’t be eligible to compete for a part of the $4million purse due to his amateur status, the experience is sure to whet the appetite for future professional events. Hastings recorded a very solid fourth placed finish in the recent Latin American Amateur Championship in Panama and comes into the event in Puerto Rico in good form. Golf fans in Cayman will be able to follow Hastings as takes on the field of seasoned professionals on the Golf Channel starting on March 7.
Playing in Panama itself this week will be Giles Hobday who will compete in the Panama Amateur Invitational Tournament for the Anibal “Rocky” Galindo Cup. This is the first time a player from the Cayman Islands will compete in this event which is also a World Amateur Golf Ranking event. The tournament itself is three days from March 8 – 10 and will be held at the Panama Golf Club.
Closer to home in Cayman the following week, North Sound Golf Course will play host to the 2024 Island Championship. Defending champions in the men’s and ladies’ divisions are Andrew Jarvis and Lauren Needham respectively. The senior men’s and super senior men’s divisions will also see Tim Hepburn and Paul Woodhouse attempt to defend their titles from last year. There is also a handicap division for men and the ladies. Title sponsor for the two day event on March 16 and 17 is Grant Thornton. President of the Cayman Islands Golf Association (“CIGA”) Daniel Fortune commented, “It is great to see Cayman golfers competing internationally and continuing to represent Cayman so well around the region. The support that Grant Thornton, as CIGA’s title sponsor, provide is thoroughly appreciated. The Island Championship is our signature event for the year and we are looking forward to a full field with highly competitive and exciting golf.”
