golf in DUBAI

November 21, 2009

TALK about the noble gesture beyond fairways and greens. South Korea's Amy Yang won the Ladies German Open in May 2008 - her first victory as a professional since turning pro in 2006 - and donated her entire prize money ($53,317) to the victims of an earthquake in China.
A kind-hearted person off course, Yang is quite a fierce competitor on course. Her life changed dramatically after she become the Ladies European Tour's youngest ever winner at the 2006 ANZ Ladies Masters as a 16-year-old amateur.
Yang was afforded a special exemption to become a member of the LET at the age of 17 and last year won two tournaments: the HypoVereinsbank Ladies German Open and the Scandinavian TPC Hosted by Annika. This year playing on the LPGA Tour, she tied for ninth at the McDonalds LPGA Championship.
Like most of the Korean golfers, she was also inspired by her compatriot Se Ri Pak. "Of course all the Korean golfers like Se Ri because she is like Annika (Sorenstam) is in Sweden. I think I was 10 or 11 and I watched Annika's game on the TV. I never thought I would play with her when I grew up! It was very exciting," said Yang who began playing golf aged 10 and moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, when she was 15 to pursue golf as a career.
"Everyone wants to be the number one golfer, don't they, like Annika did. I'm not looking at that now. This year I'm trying to get more experience. In five years maybe I can go for it," said Amy Yang who devoted herself to the LPGA Tour this year.
She's only missed two cuts in 13 tournaments and has made six in a row, including the last two Majors (the LPGA Championship and the U.S. Open).
Yang is returning to Dubai to compete in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters - the season-ending Ladies European Tour event that features a stellar star cast led by Michelle Wie. "The (Majlis) course is superb and I think it will be fun to play in Dubai again."

Quote of the day

I like Dubai, the city is amazing, so different from everything else I have seen. I love playing at the Majlis course. It is a great golf course, which is set up well for us and is always in good shape.
